Cladrastis Cladrastis kentukea Photo/Illustration: Jennifer Benner
The genus Cladrastis includes a handful of deciduous trees cultivated for their upright or dangling wisteria-like clusters of flowers (fragrant in some species) and their colorful autumn leaves. They are native to China, Japan, and the U.S. Grow them as specimen trees.
Noteworthy characteristics: Long clusters of pea-like flowers and nice autumn color.
Care: Choose a sheltered site (branches are brittle) in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil.
Propagation: Scarify seed in fall and then sow in containers outdoors or in a seedbed. Take root cuttings in winter.
Problems: Usually problem-free.

Yellowwood is a vase-shaped spreading tree with dark green foliage that turns a delicate yellow or orange in the fall and smooth light gray bark. Breathtaking, pendulous, foot-long, wisteria-like clusters of fragrant white flowers appear in late spring and early summer, often in alternate years.
