Several species of perennials and subshrubs in this genus are grown for their 5-petaled blue flowers that bloom from late summer to fall and for their reddish fall color. They are native to dry, open habitats in Africa, the Himalayas, China, and southeast Asia. Grow in a border or rock garden, or as groundcover.
Noteworthy characteristics: Good autumn color. Pretty 5-petaled flowers that resemble Phlox.
Care: Grow in full sun and moderately fertile, light, moist but well-drained soil.
Propagation: Start new plants from softwood cuttings in spring or semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Remove suckers in fall or spring, or layer in autumn.
Problems: Generally trouble-free, but powdery mildew can sometimes cause problems.

It is the star of the late-summer garden with its spiky bright red flower buds and vivid blue flowers, displaying long-lasting mahogany red foliage in fall. Spreading slowly via underground runners, this long-lived plant makes a solid mat with erect, slender red stems and bright green leaves.
