Botanical Name: Cosmos bipinnatus 'Sonata Dwarf Mix' KOZ-mose by-pin-AY-tus Genus: Cosmos
This series produces compact plants 1 foot tall and about as wide with large blossoms in pure white and many shades of pink. These season-long performers make fine edging plants.
Noteworthy characteristics: Excellent cut flowers that are ideal for a cutting garden, mixed border, or annual border. Loved by butterflies.
Care: Grow in full sun and moist but well-drained soil. Deadhead to prolong flowering, and also leave some seeds to self sow.  The plants are moderately drought and heat tolerant.
Propagation: Sow seed in situ in late spring or at 61°F in mid-spring.
Problems: Stem canker, powdery mildew, Rhizoctonia stem rot, gray mold, aphids.

This old-fashioned cultivar of the species has a mounding habit and grows 10-12 inches tall. In summer and early fall, it bears deep red and orange blossoms, which are offset by rounded leaves with white variegation. The leaves and flowers are edible.
