This Cortaderia is reputed to be sterile but when grown close to other cultivars it will sometimes set viable seed. On our coast all varieties of Cortaderia are invasive exotics which destroy native habitat.

Iowa is a zone 4 to 5 and Pampas Grass does great here. I have always had it in my yard and never had any trouble with it. Doesnt need a lot of care which is great for a lot of people that want to grow grass plants. I also do not do anything special when planting and still does great. Try it anywhere.

Cortaderia looks lovely for the first few years but when it comes time to cut it back, you may the victim of its tough, knife-edged and toothed grass blades. A friend's pastor father, faced with a new parish garden overgrown with Pampas Grass, after all else had failed, torched the clumps using kerosene. It was an extreme measure, but the only one that worked. The cultivars may be worth a trial, but do not wait over-long to cut them down if they show signs of spreading.
