Botanical Name: Clematis tangutica 'Golden Tiara' KLEM-ah-tiss tan-GOO-tih-kah Common Name: Russian virgin's bower Genus: Clematis
'Golden Tiara' is a vigorous, late-flowering climbing vine to 15 or 20 feet tall with intense golden-yellow, bell-shaped flowers that eventually fully open to reveal crimson filaments. It blooms profusely from midsummer to late fall. The seedheads are fluffy and attractive in their own right. Native to western China.
 Noteworthy characteristics: Late-blooming clematis. Vigorous grower. Profuse golden-yellow blooms. Attractive seedheads.
 Care: Plant in fertile, organically rich, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Clematis like their "feet" in the shade. Plant root ball 3 inches below the soil surface. Prune in early spring by cutting back all the previous year's stems to a pair of strong buds, 6 to 8 inches above the ground.
 Propagation: Divide or take basal cuttings in spring. Root softwood cuttings in spring, or semi-ripe cuttings in early summer. Layer in late winter or early spring.
 Problems: Clematis can be affected by scale insects, whiteflies, earwigs, aphids, wilt, powdery mildew, rust, fungal spots, and stem cankers.
