Botanical Name: Camassia leichtlinii ssp. suksdorfii 'Blue Danube' kah-MASS-ee-ah lekt-LIN-ee-eye subspecies sooks-DORF-ee-eye Synonyms: 'Blau Donau' Genus: Camassia
Spikes of violet, star-shaped flowers top stems reaching from 2 to 4 feet in late spring. The species is native to western Oregon. 'Blue Danube' would be beautiful in a border, meadow, or containers. Camassia make good cut flowers.
 Noteworthy characteristics: Bears 4- to 12-inch long spikes of violet flowers in late spring. The flower segments twist together as they fade.
 Care: In the fall, choose a site in full sun to part shade with moist but well-drained, fertile, humusy soil. Camassia do not like waterlogged soil.
 Propagation: Sow seed in a cold frame when ripe. Extract offsets when dormant in summer.
 Problems: Leaf smut and a few fungal leaf spots may occur.
