Absolutely love this tree which I have five multi-stemmed "shrubs". I've planted virginia bluebells and yellow daffodils at the bases of the trees so in the Spring the white flowers of the serviceberry, blue of the bluebells and yellow of the daffodils put on a cheery display!! People have stopped their cars to look more than once!!
Region: Mountain West
Excellent small, upright tree. Great near the house or in a perennial bed. Excellent, bright red leaf color in fall. Tasty, blueberry-like fruits in the early summer (you'll have to beat the birds to eat any though). Drought tolerant and hardy. A great substitute for a Japanese Maple for Western gardens.
We planted a 3-4' container plant on south side of our home in early spring 2004. It gets a lot of roof run off from a valley with no gutters. It has flourished and has grown to a height of 10'+. The deer browse lower limbs somewhat, but we have a very severe deer problem. Cut suckers once or twice a year. No fertilizer needed; mulch. Beautiful in 4 seasons. Spring flowers are somewhat brief. Nice summer green. Fall especially nice orange. We use as a deciduous screen for a bathroom window that faces a road, and it has served that purpose well.
