Common Name: Ornamental onion Genus: Allium

This plant bears 12- to 18-inch blooms with nearly 100 pink-rose flowers. When the flowers are spent, they are replaced by airy, fluffy seedpods.
Care: Needs winter protection in Zones 5 and 6. Best planted en masse, at least 3 plants. Needs good drainage. Foliage dies back before flowering.
Propagation: Sow seed in spring in containers or in situ. Divide clump-forming plants in spring.
Problems: Bulb rot in damp conditions. Onion fly and thrips.

This is one of my favorite plants! Does exceedingly well in my full-sun garden. Likes well-drained soil and is very easy/no fuss. HUGE blooms always amaze friends and guarantee many comments such as "looks like sparklers" or a Christmas tree topper, or Sputnik satellite. Friends thought photo in catalog looked weird, but the actual blooms are fantastic. Finished flowerheads dry well. We spray paint them bright colors and slide the stems over narrow metal rods to insert among my other live plants outside. (Stems are hollow.) People often ask, "Can I have one?" Try them...you'll like them too.
