This is a cactus. See all cactus are succulents, but not all succulents are cactus! Think Jade Plant! This is best is a dry area, planted in ground as they growing VERY BIG! However, they will live for about 100 years, or until they get this huge stalk coming from middle, blooms, then whole plant does pass on, BUT, there are always loads of "pups" as they are known, to take it's place. In fact, before long, you'll be giving away the babies (pups) to your friends and neighbors. Cactus & succulents are very friendly that way! For Agave, you must dig a deep hole for the tap root to grow into, fill it mostly back up w/amended soil, exceedingly well drainage, then set your new plant there. Don't over water, but water deeply, so the roots can grow the way they need to! Less water in winter. ENJOY
