Orienpet lily (Lilium henryi  × Lilium speciosum var. rubrum)
LIL-ee-um HEN-ree-eye ex LIL-ee-um spee-see-OH-sum variety ROO-brum
Genus:  Lilium
The brilliant blooms of these hybrid lilies boast the fragrance of Oriental lilies and the vitality and large size of trumpet lilies but with “hybrid vigor”—more strength and disease resistance and a higher tolerance of extreme cold as well as hot and humid conditions than their parents. Plants can reach a height of up to 8 feet and are covered with an abundance of blooms from July to mid-August, when many lilies have already faded. Scores of hybrids are available with varying blooming time, fragrance, form, and color, including 'Anastasia', 'Catherine the Great', 'Scheherazade', and the ever-popular 'Leslie Woodriff'.
Care:  Provide average moisture and excellent drainage, and at least a half day of dappled sunlight. Avoid siting them in deep shade or blasting sun. Protect from rabbits and deer. Plant in late fall at a depth three times the bulb diameter and at least 4 inches apart. They often need to be staked. Deadhead flowers after they fade to direct energy to the bulb. Cut stems back to the ground in fall after severe frost.
Propagation:  In fall, by division, bulblet transplanting, and scaling.
Problems:  Damage from various insects, deer, rabbits, voles, groundhogs, and birds. Gray mold and viruses spread by aphids may occur.
