Orchids at Longwood Gardens

Join Kevin Kelly on his latest trip to Longwood Gardens to swoon over the Orchids!

"I spent Sunday afternoon (before the Super Bowl) at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. They have an orchid exhibit going on the the end of March. It was a great way to spend a dreary winter afternoon. Here are a few pictures from the exhibit (held in their conservatory)."

Woooo – that Ebony orchid is to die for!

Right up my alley. That orchid is Fredclarkeara After Dark. Fred Clarke is a pioneer in breeding catasetums! He's won many awards on this clone, and others from this cross too.

Kevin, your photos are wonderful. Thanks for sharing your adventure to Longwood. What an impressive entrance to start your succession of photos. Those orchid spheres are amazing.

What a wonderful way to spend a winter afternoon. The displays are so colorful and creative. Thanks so much, Kevin, sharing your pictures.

Love Longwood Gardens! Wow to the orchid spheres and that Croton is beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Vikki in VA

Wowza! These are stunning. I still haven't made it to the gardens in that part of the country. I can see that one doesn't have to wait until Spring. Thanks for warming up this -18 degree morning.

    1. user-7007498 02/11/2016

-18!!!! I thought it was cold here. I will never complain again.

      1. Quiltingmamma 02/11/2016

Well last Feb was -40 for almost 2 weeks, but I was in Africa so didn't care. However, last week was 32 so in general it has been a warmer and shorter winter for us. But you can see why we Canadians head South for part of the Winter.
GPOD gives me hope and a warm visual to start the day with.

Really?! Stay warm, Maria! Like Kevin, I was feeling sorry for myself having to walk out to 6° this morning. I think I'll put a pair of shorts on now.....

Magnificent photos of surreal plantings. This is what I dream of! You've put Longwood on my bucket list

    1. user-7007498 02/11/2016

Longwood is awesome. They are currently renovating their extensive fountains and that part of the garden will not reopen until Spring 2017. If you ever make it out there, you also should see Chanticleer, which is only 30 minutes from Longwood, and is another bucket list garden.

Great photos, Kevin, and thanks for A. Unintentionally reminding me that there is an orchid show at my local conservatory and B. Reminding me that I have to make a *written* bucket list, so I don't forget Chanticleer and Longwood. Cheers!

Pretty faces all. Thanks for sharing! Longwood is indeed a wonderful "bucket list" destination, Tim Vojt.

    Lovely! Thanks Kevin!

Wow, orchids are my favorite, I would love to attend a show like this someday, thanks so much for sharing !

Kevin, what beautiful orchids and your photos are great, too. Longwood Gardens will definitely go on the bucket list. It's nice to converse with other plant nerds who have visiting gardens as part of their bucket list?

  12. sheila_schultz 02/11/2016

Great photos, Kevin. Orchids are so complex and these are just lovely... I can almost feel the moisture in the air! I must say though, that my attention was captured by the croton. Orange tones are what I normally see, not pink. It's pretty cool.

    1. user-7007498 02/11/2016

When I saw the colors on that croton, I was amazed. I had to have a photo of it.
      Thanks.

Beautiful photos Kevin - like Tim I thought 6 F was an insult this morning, and especially when noticing that our pond is now covered in ice! But -18! Brrr!
The orchids are amazingly complex and lovely, the different displays show the plants so well. Longwood Gardens is certainly on my wish list, too.
Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus, Ohio has their orchid show this month, too, and I will definitely take the opportunity to wander through such a beautiful space. The authorities won't let me move in! Just mean!

  14. Catasetumkid 02/11/2016

I love Longwood and I thank Kevin for including these photos. I help set up orchid displays for the Ann Arbor orchid society, and I always like to see what *can* be accomplished when you have such fabulous plants and talent for arrangement. Bravo!

  15. perenniallycrazy 02/12/2016

Swooning! I love everything Longwood. Thanks for sharing.

  16. deborah_gleason 02/12/2016

My goodness! To be able to create displays like that and keep the plants alive and thriving... I am pea green with envy! So amazing! Thanks Kevin for a gorgeous way to start my morning!

God's cream puffs of the plant world. Amazing in pics - I'm sure, astonishing in person Thanks for sharing!
