Today’s combo is pushing the limits of the evergreen/herbaceous theme we’ve been on this week, but hellebores are evergreen, right?! Anyway, this lacy combo of wonderful textures designed by Mindy Arbo is composed of ‘Filigree’ Japanese maple (Acer palmatum ‘Filigree’, USDA Hardiness Zones 5-9), variegated Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’, Zones 5-9), and lenten rose (Helleborus orientalis, Zones 4-8).
Mindy Arbo, who gardens at the Cotton-Arbo retum, her private-turned-public garden in Winchester, Massachusetts, is a master at mixing evergreens with herbaceous plants. This week we’ve been highlighting five of her awesome combos.

Mindy, This is a stunning combination! I love the textures and contrasts of the foliage. The serrated edges of the leaves on the Hellebores echo the edges of the Acer's leaves, and the form of the branches of the Acer would add to the composition in winter. I leave the Hakonechloa standing all winter in my garden, and the Hellebores are evergreen. There is 4 seasons of interest with this grouping of plants. Great job, wonderful to see pictures of the Cotton-Arbo here. john_4b
