Today's photos are from Joe out in Newcastle, Washington (Zone 8b), who says, "I love this time of the year as the rhodies and azaleas are so colorful in the front yard. I have been trying to create a more woodland feeling in my backyard since it is mostly shaded. I like to experiment with different plants, and once a plant likes an area, I leave it there. I am also trying to lighten up shady areas with yellow and white flowers and light colored foliage. I like mixing in ferns with large leafed plants and using contrasting colors of leaves." You have such a great collection of plants, Joe! Please do send in wider shots soon–I'd love to see more!

Really great plants, Joe, and so beautiful. I love the peach rhododendron. I'm trying to grow R. cinnabarinum with pendant, bell-shaped, peach flowers, but it's just a tad too freezing here. I'm jealous of that great trillium, too!
What a line-up of sumptuously colorful blooms your first 6 pictures show, Joe. Yes, that peach rhodie is certainly a heart-stopper and not one I've had the pleasure to see before. Then to have it followed up by the two photos of the deep rose/coral of 'Honorable jean Marie deMontugue'...sigh, the Pacific Northwest sure knows how to put on a spring show. Everything looks enviably beautiful.
We share the same climate and a lot of the same plants, so this is one of my favourite times of year as well Joe. Can't get enough of those wonderful rhododendrons! I also love ferns and your woodland look. Is there a special significance to the little fenced area with the Leucothoe and Bleeding Heart? Which Japanese Maple is that? Gorgeous!
There truly is nothing like spring in the Northwest. Your garden is magnificent, Joe. More pictures please. I have several rhodies in what I call sunset colors - combinations of pink, yellow and orange - that I love but that peach one is lovely. And the rest of the pictures are great too.
Any garden with Japanese maples, ferns and trillium immediately captivates my imagination. Beautiful photos; thanks for sharing.
Your gardens are awash with such wonderful spring colors, Joe, you must love walking around your yard and just taking it all in! The ferns, the maple and the moss... so calming.

Wonderful Joe.Your Rhodos and Azaleas are spectacular. The Rododendrons are beautiful this year I think it must be our mild winter in the Pacific Northwest. You truly are creating a woodland garden with all the ferns, trillium and maples.
Well, Joe, you got me hooked with the Japanese maples and clematis for sure. You definitely have the woodland vibe established. I'm jealous of the hebe too. Not really a plant I can grow with wild success where I am at...such a cool textural specimen. I am curious about the clematis montana...is that several vines planted, or just one that has done extremely well in your NW paradise? It's a beautiful bright garden, Joe, even in the shade.

We are having a rainy day here in Hilo, Hawaii, but pictures of your garden have certainly brightened things. Thank you for sharing. We have plenty of ferns and azaleas do well here also, but would like to try some more of the lovely plants in your garden. Our worst gardening challenge is a lack of soil.

Your garden is truly beautiful, Joe. I love rhododendrons and azaleas but they do not like my lime soil. Your peach R is one to dream of. I also love the little enclosures you've made and used - am filing that idea for the future. You have made a garden in which to wander - wonderful.
Creative thinking... sometimes you need to keep the dog(s) away from the more vulnerable plants :)

I want that euphorbia! And some of your shade! I'm all sun since I had to take out my Austrian Pine. I'm still in mourning, but I certainly enjoy your garden!
Monica, I have that Euphorbia in my garden and I love it. However, it is very invasive here, so I can't turn my back on it for long or it will take over.... just saying.
Ahhhhh. The fleeting time we have with viburnum gives me SO much pleasure. Loved seeing it all.., but that viburnum definitely provokes me to jealousy ! I want an entire hedge of those... On a berm !
