Jayne’s getaway garden in New Hampshire

Photo/Illustration: All photos courtesy of Jayne Spaulding

Today’s photos are from Jayne Spaulding in New Hampshire. She says, “These photos were taken last summer at our weekend cabin in the White Mountains. The property is bounded on one side by the White Mountain National Forest and the granite-bottom Baker River in the back. It’s our little bit of paradise!”

Oh Jayne, so many things to love. The red umbrella–what a pop of color! The pup peeking through the screen–adorable! The collection of candy-colored daylilies–fun! The claw-foot tub for summer baths in the garden-Heaven! The creek out back–beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing your paradise with us.

——Winter is the perfect time to take a photographic stroll through the photos you took in your garden this year……and then send some in to me at [email protected]!

It must be simply amazing to sit in one of those Adirondack chairs and have that glorious rushing stream in view and hearing. I know I would never tire of it. What a treasure to have literally in your own back yard. Is there a place you can safely access sticking a toe (or more) in the water?
Love your colorful daylilies...is the particularly vibrant red one Ruby Spider? You really have a magical get-away property...lucky, lucky you!

A perfect paradise! Everything perfection, and I like the lights strung on the deck and especially on that umbrella. I love the Dutch door on the greenhouse. And a veggie garden too, nothing lacking, even a handy dandy wine rack on the deck railing. Thank you, Jayne.

You know what you need? More time to get away! Very awesome. I think I'm going to put a granite-bottomed stream in my backyard...... :)

good morning everyone. As we sit in winters grip, it is so nice to see these gardens! Jayne, I can smell the warm fresh air when I look at these photos! What a nice little get a way you have created! I love the tub idea but maybe with a couple of bamboo surrounding it. Thanks for sharing your little bit of paradise with all of us gardeners!

Thanks for the wonderful photo tour of a place I've driven by at least a thousand times. Your place along the Baker River is a very special location.

my problem would be that i would never getaway from the getaway! beautiful spot and with plantings that perform and give color with a minimum of work so you can actually enjoy your paradise

What a perfect setting for a getaway Jayne! Love that stream! It looks like you are not being bothered by deer visiting from the forest as your lilies, daylilies and hostas are thriving. How nice to sit amongst the flowers as you have your bath!

Jayne, what a wonderful paradise. There are so many features that are favorites. The deck, firepit, greenhouse, raised beds, and the RIVER....The plant choices are good for a weekend place. Good color but not a lot of maintenance chores. You can just tell you've had many great weekends at your paradise. Thanks for sharing.
Tractor1, the photo of the kitten is adorable.

I would not be able to leave! How many early, early Monday mornings do you drive back to reality because you couldn't bear to leave Sun. night? What a beautiful paradise. I love all the twinkling lights and that wine bottle tiki torch! Great color and texture.

What a charming and restful setting. The perfect get away. I too would find it hard to leave. Love all the pops of colour with the umbrella and flowers. Must be very tranquil listening to the river and nature around you.

What a truly wonderful "paradise" Jayne. Was the cottage originally a log cabin? The river looks very, very cold - does it remain so even in summer? That is a fantastic rock in the river bed. Wouldn't you love to have it in your yard ^_^

CJgardens: Thank you. That's Jilly as a kitten, some thirteen years ago. We have seven house cats now but she's my shadow. Here's a recent photo of Jilly... if you click on my underlined name a larger photo opens.

Everything about this place says, this is where we relax and play! And I'm guessing you spend a good amount of time here, as evidenced by veggie beds and that gorgeous greenhouse. Good for you! My favorite feature is the river, lovely little bathing pools, sigh... I bet it's impressive in spring run-off! Thanks for sharing your joy!

Thanks for all your kind comments. We have owned the River House for 7 years. The log house was built in the late 90s and has a great, open and bright interior with a back room with a bank of large windows that looks over the river...a nice cozy spot to watch the river when the gardens are deep in snow!

Ah yes what a getaway. After a day working in those lovely gardens, what better way to sit back and relax on the deck with a nice cold beer and admire your work. Cheers.
