It's summer in the backyard woodland retreat

Photo: Judith Detert-Moriarty

This area behind a garage on an historic 1858 property had been the location of a rubbish pile for over 100 years. In 1995, I cleared out the century of debris, relocated an existing old arbor on the property, and gradually each year have planted a few woodland plants and flowers native to Wisconsin. Although others told me the new plantings wouldn't survive given they're beneath a black walnut tree, today it's a beautiful, rustic, and quiet refuge from the daily bustle and noise of our central city location.

Marystol writes: Absolutely beautiful! We have a secret garden also in our Michigan backyard. Our grandchildren love to visit and play house and have tea parties. Posted: 9:33 am on July 20th
