My mother found this plant growing in her back yard - would like to know what it is!

llewey writes: Mystery solved! It is indeed a Hollyhock - deep purple, quite lovely. Have no idea how it got into Mom's garden; birds most likely I guess. Just glad I gave her and answer before she decided to chop it down.
Thanks again! Posted: 8:26 pm on July 6th
laurawege writes: it may be a "cheese mallow " they reseed and can appear from no where , they have purple and white striped flowers that grow along the stem where the leaves attach to the stem, they begin in a mound like the picture and soon grow upward , they are in the same family as holly hock, malva . Or it could be another mallow there are a million of them . it doesn't look like a ladys mantle to me Posted: 7:20 pm on June 29th
RobinB writes: Definitely a hollyhock and not Lady's Mantle. I have both growing from seed, so I am 100% sure about this! Posted: 4:42 pm on June 29th
MuffettG writes: It's either a Ladies Mantle or a baby Holly Hock. Look for a stem that gets taller/ with more leaves, that would be Holly Hock. If it blooms out in yellow flowers soon it is a Ladies Mantle. Posted: 4:09 pm on June 29th
llewey writes: There are finally some buds beginning to show - not in the leaf centers as the Lady's mantle appears to have, so perhaps 'hollyhock' will be the answer. Hopefully, the flowers will develop soon so we can finally ID it.
I appreciate your posts - they've been most helpful! Posted: 7:25 pm on June 23rd
elamoth writes: it looks like hollyhock to me. if it comes up with a tall stalk of flowers it is for sure:) Posted: 8:31 pm on June 22nd
llewey writes: so far, it's not showing any signs of flowering Posted: 3:46 pm on June 19th
kevilicious writes: It may be Alchemilla mollis (Lady's mantle), hard to say without seeing flowers. Does it have yellowish flowers?
