They frequently have a white sap that is toxic and can be incredibly painful if you somehow get it in your eye. Watering errors are common problems with euphobias. You don't want to water the plant much if at all if it not in a growth cycle i.e. its sunny, warm and the there are signs off growth. Or another possiblity is if you stopped watering it for so long that it lost its roots and the got a fungus from sitting in wet soil. Or it could be leaving the plant out when it got freezing cold at night. soil mix can make a big diffence too! It takes some practice to get the watering right and other factors right. by the way, I hate terra cotta! I find things grow better in plastic but thats true here in New Mexico. You have to find what works for you and a soil mix that does well with you level of humidity. Ask your local cactus and succulent society, they are ususaly more than willing to help. Eventually you wil learn to miss the puddle, groundhog2. Good luck. Posted: 4:24 pm on November 30th

If it's in a plastic or ceramic container, it's probably been over-watered, and possibly over-fertilized. Next time you get a cactus try planting it in terra cotta. Mine are all planted in terra cotta and I have a hard time keeping them watered. However they will survive drying out better than they will being too wet. They only need a very light dose of fertilizer once a year in the spring.
