It's one of those things that, at first, you just can't believe. Surely this isn't a real product, you think to yourself: A bird feeder that prevents squirrels from eating from it by flipping them into the air (it really spins them around like they're on a merry-go-round, but I'm not here to judge terminology in advertising). It sounds a little bit inhumane at first, but then slowly your wheels start spinning and...it's brilliant! No more shelling out money for bags of bird feed that keep the squirrels nice and fat while the birds have to flutter around, waiting for the leftovers. You can finally sit in your garden and bird watch like you've always wanted.
The downside? You'll probably give up watching the birds and start squirrel watching. It comes with a hefty price tag of around $150, but this YouTube video makes the Droll Yankees® Yankee Flipper Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder look like it's well worth investing in for the entertainment value alone.

But this year, the squirrel decided to attack the feeder from the top. He crawled up the pole (he used to jump from the side of the house), sat on top of the feeder, and leaned over and gnawed away at the plastic where the hanger enters the tube. Once he made a hole he scooped out the bird seed by hand. Sooooo, I got some rather sharp metal mesh from the hardware store and wrapped that around the feeder tube where he had eaten through it, AND THEN I added a clear plastic umbrella to foil him from getting to the top of the feeder. Hah! Now I've got him!
Just remember to recharge the feeder every month or so. Now, if I can just figure out how to keep those greedy pig mourning doves off the feeder.......... Posted: 12:10 am on May 6th
