The flowers are sometimes produced on the leafless stems in winter, thus one alternative name for the plant, "Winterbloom".

The native Hamamelis virginiana blooms here in November/December, while the intermedia hybrids bloom in January/February, all wonderful winter-blooming shrub/trees, underused and under-appreciated.
