Today's photos are from Ann Orr in Markham, Ontario. Ann says, "When we moved in here in 1991 the back garden was just a lawn and a couple of trees. It sloped steeply with a difference of 6 feet from one side to the other. We had the rockery installed and some levelling done and when the back addition was done the contractors used the back fill to create another level area and bank beside where the lower deck is now. Everything else, planting etc., I have done myself unless it involves building, in which case my husband does it. We make a useful team and have done for 47 years this September!" Happy almost-anniversary, Ann & John! Your garden is clearly a labor of love--stunning!

tractor1 writes: My kind of garden, has that DIY relaxed look rather than obvious professionally done uptight pretentiousness. It's very refreshing to hear someone indicate what elements were professionally done rather than imply by their silence that they did all the major earth moving, boulder placement, and mature tree planting. I love the tiered decking, everything about it, and blackeye susans everywhere are one of my favorite 'deerpruf' flowers. I see two empty deck chairs waiting for me and a friend. meander1 writes: Ann, it certainly looks like you and John have been a very successful and collaborative team in creating a delightful back yard oasis. The deck is beautiful and I can well imagine how satisfying it is to sit there and look out on your labor of love. The design details in the railing of the upper deck railing are particularly handsome and impressive. I see lots of my favorite perennials so I would feel right at home.
