Help! What kind of plant or weed is this? Can I keep it or will it kill my grass???

This plant is about 3 feet tall, the stems are a dark purple almost black color. I think it's gorgeous but my fiance thinks it's a weed. We are renting the house we live in and this is our first summer so we don't know if it's a weed that sprouted up or a nice plant the previous tenants put in that grew alot this year.
