DreamGardener writes: if in fact it Is Mullein (sure looks like it!), and you like the plant, you can leave the dead flower stalk up for the winter to feed the Finches - they love the seeds. It will sow more for you as well. Posted: 2:30 pm on May 15th

anniespeed writes: This looks very much like common mullein, or velvet dock, a member of the figwort family. It's a biennial plant with large silvery velvet leaves that in it's second year sends up a tall(4-5 ft.) stalk with yellow flowers. It has an interesting architectural look in the garden, and I often leave it to enjoy.. it's an oddity! I do cut down the stalk before it sets seed however..
