10 Attractive container gardening ideas
comments (0) January 23rd, 2012 in gallery
Container gardening is a splendid idea if you do not have enough cultivating area. There are a variety of planters available in the market which you can install in a small area to make it appear attractive with vibrant colors of the flowers growing in them. There are hanging plants which only look beautiful when planted in a container. Apart from the kits and planters available in the market, there are numerous salvaged objects in a daily household which can be used to make attractive container gardening art-pieces. Here are ten attractive container gardening ideas which you can implement in your own garden.
1. Utensil planters
You can make planters for your porch plants out of the old ceramic and aluminum utensil like ice buckets, old kettles, tea pots, roasters, tin cans, aluminum jello molds etc. You can also convert few utensils into window boxes for the windows which open in the garden. If you have a swing in your garden, you can hang old kettles to the swing with hanging plants
2. Old buckets
Old plastic buckets can be reused for growing vegetables in a hanging position. You can drill the seeds in the bucket full of soil and then hang it with its handle to grow vegetables. It looks attractive as well as offers you fresh vegetables to eat. You can also plant herbs in these buckets so that you can pluck the aromatic leaves whenever you require them in your kitchen.
3. Old cans
You can throw the organic waste from your kitchen into the old garbage cans and cover it with soil once it is about to be full. When you need manure after few months, you can take it out and sprinkle directly from the can. Airtight sealed metal cans for food, drink or paint etc can be used as seed pots till the plants are ready to be transplanted.
4. Beer Bottles
You can clean the used beer bottles and use them to plant ornamental water plants. Indoor plants which form small climbers can also be planted in these bottles by installing an iron spike in them. Colorful bottles look amazing with water plants in them. The color of the water appears as per the color of the bottle and makes it naturally beautiful.
5. Milk bottle plant pots
You can cut the bottom of the milk bottle to fill in soil. The actual pouring side of the bottle can act as the essential bottom hole. You can plant in decorative plants in this bottle and hang it to the lamp post. You can install one milk bottle plant pot to each lamp post in your garden. These bottles can be painted in attractive ways as well.
6. Iron metal planters
Iron metal planters give an antique look. This type of planter has moss liners that hold other planters. The iron planter gets rusted from the downside. These planters are very strong and durable but get rusted very soon if not painted or taken care of regularly. These planters are very heavy so it is not possible to lift or shift them often.
7. Aluminum planters
Aluminum planters are liked by all because of low maintenance. These planters are the most ideal plant planters as they are strong, lightweight, non reactive (does not rust) and do not crack easily. They can be easily molded into remarkable designs such as lattice patterns and hook. This silvery metal gives a sophisticated look and if painted does not lose the sheen.
8. Wooden planters
Wooden planters are a popular attraction and are considered as natural planters. These planters can be creatively designed as it is easy to carve them. However, these planters are not durable as they rot very fast. Plants which require less water can be planted in this type of planter. However, wooden window boxes exhibit a natural look if coated with a transparent polish.
9. Plastic planters
Plastic planters are yet another type of popular planters. These boxes are light and are available in numerous attractive designs. They are portable hence can easily be transferred from one place to another. They are affordable as well as durable as they do not corrode. Plastic planters are available in many colors and selection can be done according to the color of the flowers that are to be grown in the box.
10. Self watering planters
Self watering planters do not let the plants dry fast when people forget to water them. Plants get water for a longer period of time from the large water reservoirs which keep the soil moist. This type of a window box is good for those people who have to travel frequently and hence are away from home.
