What is this large leafed plant, please?

Fairly large leaves.
Three ft. tall.
 No flowers or fruit.

I am stymied!  What might this plant be that is growing in the gravel at the side of a house that we just bought (September) near Victoria, BC? The plant is about three ft. high.  The deer have tested the lower leaves but have generally left the plant alone.  There's no evidence of flower buds or fruit.
