This strange fellow just popped up like a mushroom with orange berries that look like pyracantha berries. no foliage, just a stalk with berries.

Muzza writes: I reckon its the fruit of Arum italicum. It will have well patterned arum style leaves which emerge in sping followed by a hooded arum style flower which is translucent green and fairly insipid. Around Ballarat in Victoria Australia they are growing nuts... very weedy. You will see them in lots of English garden books though. They do well in shady spots but will take over your garden if the conditions are right.
Have fun with them. One other word of caution is they are poisonous so be careful little kids dont think they are lollies!
Have fun :-) Posted: 6:58 am on September 14th
fuzzerbear writes: Thank you for the comments. this was in my daughter-in-laws garden. I will let her know what to look for in the spring. I suppose she can plant the seed pods if she wants to propagate these. Posted: 12:34 am on September 6th

kclark2359 writes: That may be the fruit of an arum. Do you have Jack-in-the-Pulpit(Arisaema triphyllum) or wake robin or lords and ladies (arum maculatum) or other arum species near by? They generally flower in the spring, go dormant and then send up this kind of fruit stalk in late summer or fall Posted: 4:03 pm on September 5th
