Is this a blueberry?

This berry plant is in our backyard.  It looks like a blueberry bush, but the berries have a unique star pattern at the bottom of the berry.  Is this a wild berry?  Is it edible?  It's a large mature bush, so I'd love to harvest these berries if possible.

jasonkuykendall writes: It is, in fact, Salal. I do live in the Pacific Northwest. Thanks both of you for responding. Per Wikipedia, "Gaultheria shallon berries were a significant food resource for native people, who both ate them fresh and dried them into cakes. They were also used as a sweetener, and the Haida used them to thicken salmon eggs. " Posted: 11:19 pm on December 7th

riverlady writes: This is not a blueberry. Blueberries are more blue with a sort of 'dusty' surface and no star on the end. The leaves aren't like blueberry leaves either which are much smaller in relation to the berries. Your berries also appear to be slightly irregular in shape which blue berries are not. Good luck finding out what these are. Any more in your area?
