invasive mystery is taking over

This plant just popped up in the yard and is spreading everywhere! It is very fleshy and does not pull out of the ground, it simply breaks off.  I'm having to resort to chemicals to keep it from taking over the yard!  Can anyone identify this plant so I know how to erradicate it from the yard?  I should mention this is growing in Minneapolis in zone 4.

stuvmo writes: Thanks Linneaz. It sure looks and acts like it could be Fallopia japonica. I guess I have my work cut out for me to eradicate this from the yard. Posted: 4:58 pm on September 12th
Linneaz writes: It would appear to be a Japanese knotweed, AKA polygonum cuspidatum or Fallopia japonica, an invasive weed or valuable herb, depending on your perspective. If knotweed, it will grow tall and have white blossoms.

Alternatively, it could be ceratostigma plumbaginoides, a groundcover perennial with blue blossoms in the fall.

Both have very similar alternate leaves with fleshy stems.
