Invasive plant found in Zone 5 Maine garden. In the lawn, in the beds, everywhere. Seems to prefer shade.  Is it Adenophora? Can't pull the roots as they go on forever (see picture #2 for as much as I could pull of one root).  Any thoughts on control?

Thank you!

nankat writes: Yes, I agree, it is a violet. They don't usually look like this..the leaves are different but I have them, too. They are all over. Need to pull them up along with their roots. Posted: 6:42 pm on July 4th
Cubkin writes: From the first picture, this appears to be a common violet - extremely invasive and almost impossible to get rid of. They grow from underground rizomes and to get rid of a plant, you have to dig up all of the rizomes. You can abolish them eventually, but you have to be vigilant and persistent. I have been trying to eliminate them in my yard and gardens for more than 30 years...since a previous owner of the house thought it would be great to plant a few around the flagpole. Good luck!
