Is the coast clear?!

Please indulge me while I personify this plant I came across on my walk home from the coffeehouse with my family last weekend. To me, it looks like she was being chased, and is hiding around a corner, hoping she's shaken the villain who's chasing her. (1st & 2nd photos) Or perhaps she's just robbed the bank and is fleeing the police (this is, after all, the exterior wall of my bank). Then she peeks around the corner to see if the coast is clear. (3rd photo) OK, perhaps a bit too much caffeine... But check out where this plant is growing from! (4th photo) Talk about beauty from an unlikely source!

Welcome to the Fine Gardening GARDEN PHOTO OF THE DAY blog! Every weekday we post a new photo of a great garden, a spectacular plant, a stunning plant combination, or any number of other subjects. Think of it as your morning jolt of green.

R E A D E R   P H O T O S: We love featuring your photos, too. If you think you have a photo that we should share on the Garden Photo of the day, email us. Send hi-res images if possible. We'll only respond if we plan to use your photo.

PeonyFan writes: Love this post! I have sometimes had similar thoughts when I saw ivy climbing the noise-barrier wall along a nearby freeway--what are they fleeing from? Also, what are they growing in? Seemingly nothing but cement. It's wonderful how some plants can do so much with so little. The flame-like patterns of the vines on the wall are so lovely I've wondered how I could photograph them. However, the state trooper is unlikely to appreciate my pausing on the roadway with a camera.
