White flowered June blooming full shade plant

This is a plant that came up in my garden that I don't remember planting.  It is growing in full shade on the north side of a garage.  The foliage reaches a height of 3 - 3 1/2 feet.  In late May or early June it sends out long wands covered in white flowers, about 1 foot long or more.  It's foliage and flowers remind me of Actaea (bugbane) - but it flowers in late spring - not fall!  Last spring there was one clump - this spring there is another one, so it seems to be spreading.  The first 2 pictures were taken in late April.  The last 2 pictures were taken a couple of days ago.  I did not photograph it last year, so I don't have a picture of it in bloom (yet)!  I cut off the spent flower stalks last year because I didn't know if it was a rampant re-seeder, so I don't know if it sets berries or what.  Thanks for any input!

goodearth writes: Yes, the foliage and habit are so strongly similar to Actaea simplex, which blooms August to Sept., but I had forgotten there was a native, spring-blooming Actaea - this one is most definitely Actaea racemosa - aka, Black Cohosh, aka, Fairy Candles (which describes the blooms perfectly!). There are some great photos of it in bloom online. I'm thrilled that this lovely native found its way into my garden! Thanks for everyones help! Posted: 8:46 am on May 16th

cxsdia writes: That is an actaea, just like you thought. Different types bloom at different times in the season. I have one that blooms in mid June and another that blooms in October. Posted: 3:56 pm on May 14th
