Early Spring Beauty Popping Out
comments (0) April 14th, 2011 in gallery
The red quince started blooming after a mild spell in the winter weather, and then the late January snow came to make a beautiful landscape in red and white. Except for the dogwood and maples, these photographs were made in our front yard which, being on the west side of our house and the east side of a wide residential street, gets that nice warm noon to late afternoon winter sun. The dogwood and maples are on the east side of the house under a heavy cover of deciduous trees and show their colors later in the spring but still before many spring plants start blooming. All the photographs were taken with a Nikon D2Xs camera on a tripod. The dogwood and quince photographs were made with an 18-70mm telephoto lens whereas the redbud, peony and walking stick were made with a 105mm macro lens.

About this contest
In the garden, the signs of spring are subtle but significant. Snow recedes and brown turns to green as the weather warms and the daylight lengthens. Grab your camera and post a "spring awakenings" photo in this gallery by April 15 for a chance to win a prize.
Fine Gardening's staff members will choose a winner based on design appeal, creativity, and photo quality. The winner will receive a $100 gift certificate from White Flower Farm. See the Official Contest Rules for details.
