April Showers Bring Pasque Flowers at Market Hill

Being a native of South Dakota now living in Minnesota, I think it is fun to have the South Dakota State Flower in my fairy garden at Market Hill.  Pulsatilla hirsutissima which is also know by the common names pasque flower, prairie crocus, windflower, Easter flower, May Day flower and meadow anemone often blooms before the snow has completely melted.  It quite reliably blooms in mid April in my garden.  It is interesting that although all parts of this plant are poisonous, it has been used medicinally for centuries by Native Americans.
