Hummingbirds by Maureen

All of my submissions are flowers growing in my garden. I have always enjoyed gardening but work and family always seemed to get in my way until the past couple of years. I am now dedicated to filling my yard with flowers and as I develop my gardens, I am mindful of the wildlife around our home. Plantings are being selected and areas being prepared with them in mind as I am also an avid bird watcher and just love all of the wildlife around us. We have hummingbirds during the summer, and all year round we have birds, squirrels, chipmunks, groundhogs (to my dismay-they eat my tender young plants), rabbits (they also feast on my plants), deer, skunks and from time to time a black bear. Our home seems to be a virtual zoo at times and my husband and I love every minute of it. I have also worked hard at attracting butterflies, hummingbird moths (I have at least 3 species every year), bees, etc. The flowers and wildlife give me great pleasure and since I am also an amateur photographer, I really enjoy photographing it all. Life is good.

About this contest
In the garden, the signs of spring are subtle but significant. Snow recedes and brown turns to green as the weather warms and the daylight lengthens. Grab your camera and post a "spring awakenings" photo in this gallery by April 15 for a chance to win a prize.
Fine Gardening's staff members will choose a winner based on design appeal, creativity, and photo quality. The winner will receive a $100 gift certificate from White Flower Farm. See the Official Contest Rules for details.
