A subtle weave

This planting relies on the interplay of both contrasts and similarities. Feathery mauve seed heads of fountain grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Moudry') contrast texturally with the stiff, bristly foliage of blue Colorado Spruce (Picea pungens 'Glauca Globosa') while offering a harmonizing link with the pinkish flower heads of PeeGee hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata 'Grandiflora'). The veined hydrangea leaves and arching blades of fountain grass serve to knit all the elements together. Ellen Coster and Maurice Isaac created this combination in their Mattituck, New York, garden.
