I found this little combo a few years ago in the Lady's Border at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. Red/burgundy is the theme here, and the star of the show is the architectural 'Oakhurst' pineapple lily (Eucomis 'Oakhurst', USDA Hardiness Zones 8-11). It's burgundy tones are subtly matched with the red stems of 'Dawn' viburnum (Viburnum X bodnantense 'Dawn', Zones 7-8) and the deep burgundy foliage of 'Bull's Blood' beets (Beta vulgaris 'Bull's Blood', annual). Rounding out the combo is the wispy white flowers of Gladiolus callianthus (Zones 8-10).

Welcome to the Fine Gardening GARDEN PHOTO OF THE DAY blog! Every weekday we post a new photo of a great garden, a spectacular plant, a stunning plant combination, or any number of other subjects. Think of it as your morning jolt of green.

READER PHOTOS: We love featuring your photos, too. If you think you have a photo that we should share on the Garden Photo of the day, email us. Send hi-res images if possible. We'll only respond if we plan to use your photo.

arboretum writes: brilliant! as a real fan of maroon/black/dk. purple foliage and flower, this combo is inspiring. also note that the sophisticated designer of that bed- has included the white and maroon flowered acidanthera (in the background, one flower showing).
thanks much
