In 2010, we challenged you to design a container that embodied the theme “less is more.” At the time, the economy was in rough shape, and we thought this would be a nice way to demonstrate that downsizing doesn’t have to mean giving up beauty or style.

The concept is just as applicable today, and we’re happy that dozens of our readers took up the challenge and designed some amazing containers. But “less” doesn’t just mean fewer plants. We told you to interpret “less is more” any way you’d like, and you got creative. We published the winner's photo and many of the finalist photos in the May/June issue of Fine Gardening (#139). We didn't have room for these in the magazine, so we put together this little slideshow instead.

SherylAZ writes: They were all quite impressive, really. But the hens and chicks were the best, sweet and smart. Good job, Kim! Posted: 8:33 am on August 1st
Robert_in_Cleveland writes: They're all awesome! My favorites are the ones with one or 2 kinds of plants. I think my absolute favorite is the hens and chicks in their nest. Adorable! And a horticultural pun, to boot. The horn with the red flowers is a very close second for me. I love the coleus in the basket too. That would look great on any porch, and the design is approachable. I love the big fancy designs too, but sometimes it's just the simplest container plantings that truly capture my eye.
I may very well be copying a design or 2, especially the birds nest. :-) Posted: 9:02 pm on April 5th
