Before Christmas 2010, this Yellow shafted flicker arrived in our yard, It was satisfied to pick up the suet dropped to the ground untill the snow arrived, then he had to master landing on the dangling suet feeder.  Now he's a regular on the feeder, but he has a waist not---want not attitude, as he will still fly down to get what he dropped.

McNeed writes: Our suet feeder has also been visited often this winter by a yellow shafted flicker which is not the norm for SE Michigan. I also saw a Carolina Wren yesterday, scouting for insects, even though there is still plenty of snow cover. Fifty degrees is in the forecast for the end of the week, spring is in sight.
