Nightshade or Eggplant

This very robust plant has sprouted up in my Vegetable patch very close to where I planted Thai 'pea' eggplant seeds. It has a purplish stem, dark green leaves and small white flowers, the fruit of which are in small bunches. My mother-in-law said it looks like Deadly Nightshade, and I'm not sure whether to just pull it out. Could it be the Thai eggplant?

AussieFossil writes: I'm in Melbourne Australia, and since early November temps have averaged mid-70's - low 80's with an unusual amount of rain. I'll post a pic of what I THINK might be the Thai eggplant seeds finally coming through next to this mystery plant. It's curious, as I've never since the nightshade anywhere on my property before. This is the first year I've created a raised vegetable patch on what is a vast dry patch of couch grass. If It is nightshade I will rip it out as it is blocking light to a number of smaller seedlings.

Seamew writes: You don't say where you are (somewhere warm if you're growing eggplant now, no doubt!) but I know in my Z6-ish garden I most often have bittersweet nightshade, not deadly nightshade. It looks very similar to your plant--and no, I don't believe Thai eggplant is as robust as that! At least it wouldn't be in MY garden. Posted: 2:46 pm on December 31st
