Deep purple combined with gold and white makes for some high drama in this combo by Mindy Arbo. Today's combo includes 'Gold Lace' juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Gold Lace', USDA Hardiness Zones 3-9), white-variegated Autumn Charm(TM) sedum (Sedum 'Lajos', Zones 3-11), deep purple 'Purple Emperor' and 'Picolette' sedums (Sedum 'Purple Emperor' and S. 'Picolette', Zones 3-11), the icy blue foliage of a fir (Abies sp., Zones 3-8), and a 'Royal Purple' daylily (Hemerocallis 'Royal Purple', Zones 3-10).

Mindy Arbo, who gardens at the Cotton-Arbo retum, her private-turned-public garden in Winchester, Massachusetts, is a master at mixing evergreens with herbaceous plants. This week we're highlighting five of her awesome combos.

If you can't make it to the Cotton-Arbo retum in person, you can visit them online here.

Welcome to the Fine Gardening GARDEN PHOTO OF THE DAY blog! Every weekday we post a new photo of a great garden, a spectacular plant, a stunning plant combination, or any number of other subjects. Think of it as your morning jolt of green.

Sign up to get new posts delivered to your inbox each morning so you'll always remember to take a look, or subscribe to our RSS feed. We look forward to sharing our garden travels with you.

If you think you have a photo that we should share on the Garden Photo of the day, email us. Send hi-res images to mgervais@taunton.com with GPOD in the subject line. We'll only respond if we plan to use your photo.
