The not-so-subtle contrasts in foliage color and texture create a striking scene in garden designer Ryan Gainey's Decatur, Georgia, perennial border. This planting features smoke tree (Cotinus coggyria 'Royal Purple'), bronze fennel (Foeniculum vulgare 'Purpureum'), plume poppy (Macleaya cordata), barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Rose Glow'), Spiraea japonica 'Goldflame', and royal fern (Osmunda regalis).
