At the Enid A. Haupt Garden of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., 'Silver Falls' dichondra (Dichondra argentea 'Silver Falls', USDA Hardiness Zones 10-11) spills over a wall, creating a sheet of glimmering silver. This tender plant is a popular spiller in container designs, but is also effective draping from high places in a garden. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and will grow several feet in one season.

Welcome to the Fine Gardening GARDEN PHOTO OF THE DAY blog! Every weekday we post a new photo of a great garden, a spectacular plant, a stunning plant combination, or any number of other subjects. Think of it as your morning jolt of green.

Sign up to get new posts delivered to your inbox each morning so you'll always remember to take a look, or subscribe to our RSS feed. We look forward to sharing our garden travels with you.

If you think you have a photo that we should share on the Garden Photo of the day, email us. Send hi-res images to mgervais@taunton.com with GPOD in the subject line. We'll only respond if we plan to use your photo.

perennialpal writes: How lovely! I was under the impression that this plant was a shade plant. Maybe that is why I haven't been able to get it to grow for me here in Texas.....or is it just too hot here? Posted: 9:59 am on August 13th
David_Bockman writes: Lovely-- nice to see what it can do outside of a container. A non-seasonal way to achieve this is by the careful sighting of a Cedrus Atlantica 'Glauca Pendula', although that tree is not appropriate for every site of course. Posted: 9:35 am on August 13th
