While the subtle flowers of Japanese maples usually come and go without notice, the winged seeds are another story. This Japanese maple has stunning, bright red seeds that flutter in the slightest breeze in spring. They're a surprisingly vivid contrast to the burgundy leaves, even from a distance.

Welcome to the Fine Gardening GARDEN PHOTO OF THE DAY blog! Every weekday we post a new photo of a great garden, a spectacular plant, a stunning plant combination, or any number of other subjects. Think of it as your morning jolt of green.

Sign up to get new posts delivered to your inbox each morning so you'll always remember to take a look, or subscribe to our RSS feed. We look forward to sharing our garden travels with you.

If you think you have a photo that we should share on the Garden Photo of the day, email us. Send hi-res images to mgervais@taunton.com with GPOD in the subject line. We'll only respond if we plan to use your photo.

KerryAnn writes: I have it on good authority (Gregory, the former estate gardener) that the cultivar is 'Bloodgood'.

purplegrny1 writes: When my boys were small, there was a giant maple..not Japanese, but maple none-the-less..outside our front door. The boys called it the Helicopter Tree for those charming seeds which floated to the earth beneath and sprouted seedlings quite often. Our own Lace Leaf Japanese maple is now carrying the tradition on to the grandchildren. A memory which makes me smile. Posted: 1:38 pm on July 21st
Catecaruso writes: I would love to know that cultivar - KerryAnn can you please share with us if you find out the information from the estate gardener? Thanks! Posted: 10:23 am on July 21st

planteater writes: Beautiful. I had breast cancer and created a pink garden to sit and spend time with God and myself. I have a Japanese Maple in a pot there. It is still very small, but I look forward to being around when it is large. Posted: 9:01 am on July 21st
