At Asticou Azalea Garden in Northeast Harbor, Maine, these stone steps seem to float above the water. It's a serene sight. That said, assistant editor Kerry Ann Moore says she felt like she was in in a Mario Brothers video game, hopping from stone to stone!

Welcome to the Fine Gardening Garden Photo of the Day blog! Every weekday we post a new photo of a great garden, a spectacular plant, a stunning plant combination, or any number of other subjects. Think of it as your morning jolt of green.

arboretum writes: The Asticou gardens is certainly one of the jewels in our richly endowed region of New England. I was so thrilled when I finally discovered it a few yrs ago.It is beautifully maintained and there are so many wonderful nooks and crannies. Close observation, such as in the moss garden, can teach one a lot of valuable techniques.

I cannot remember from other J gardens I have visited, but i would not be surprised if, in Japan, the stones are set so that they jut just above the surface of the water.I could be completely wrong about that, but I do feel that that siting would be much more effective than this one.
best,
