The success of a shade planting lies in the thoughtful combination of foliage shapes, textures, and colors. Plantsman Charles Cresson of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, added visual appeal to a drift of lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis) by contrasting its bold foliage with the delicate fronds of a maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum).
