Muhly grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris) is one of my favorites for a long season of interest.  It holds its own during the summer with spikey, blue-green foliage, but becomes the star in late summer when the pink plumes begin to emerge.  This dew-laden photo was taken early one November morning.  The pink plumes, the mist off the lake, the flattened Iris sibirica and the last holdout of Rudbeckia fulgida are a poignant reminder that the garden is settling down for its winter rest.
