Hosta Halcyon, Heuchera Amethyst Mist, Hakonechloa macra Aureola and Astrantia major Hadspen Blood keep the border going all summer in this Bainbridge Island garden.  Carex Cappuccino in front; Phormium Platts Black and Lonicera nitida Baggesens Gold peeking out in back.
Color accents in Rheum palmatum Atropurpureum harmonizes with dwarf Weigela florida Midnight Wine, Carex Cappuccino and Phormium Sundowner in back.  Euphorbia myrsinites (an invasive in some regions) provides contrast to the chocolate tones.
Pinus wallichiana Nana grows slowly with Polystichum polyblepharum and Brunnera macrophylla Jack Frost.  Anemanthele lessoniana peeks out behind the pot and Acer palmatum Fireglow overhead.
Echeveria (an annual here) gets company from Heuchera x villosa Brownies, Helianthemum Ben Ledi, and Pittosporum tenuifolium Silver Sheen.

Foliage provides reliable interest all summer (and spring, fall & winter too!) in this Bainbridge Island, WA garden.  Flowers interspersed (not shown in pics) provide ongoing change, but the backbone of the garden is the foliage.
