Half of my patio garden is devoted to a patch of grass with ornamental and vegetable borders, and the other half is a concrete patio with plants in containers. Finding room for a functional yet sightly compost pile was challenging. My solution is a large plastic laundry hamper. Its virtues include numerous perforations along the front and back panels that allow air circulation and a removable hinged lid that makes it easy to add piecemeal vegetable matter, such as kitchen scraps, but still keeps out the rain. The surface is also scrubbable and therefore easy to keep clean. I keep the hamper hidden in the corner of the patio atop a small piece of plywood fitted with casters.
