The Haywood County Master Gardener Volunteer Program of western North Carolina contacted us recently to promote their upcoming garden tour, and sent along some really nice photos from last year’s tour, so I thought I’d share them with you all today. I grew up just north of this area in southwestern Virginia, so the view of the Blue Ridge Mountains beyond the columbine in the first photo tugs at my heartstrings. And the water fetaure in the second photo? Sublime! Enjoy!
This year’s tour will take place June 23. If you want to take part, and it looks to be a good one, check out the following details from the press release:
The tour will begin at the historic dairy barn that stands along side 3 huge silos in the Mountain Research Station at 265 Test Farm Road off of Raccoon Road in Waynesville. The major sponsors for the garden tour will have vendor space at the barn to distribute information about their businesses or to sell their products. Directions to the gardens will be distributed to ticket holders from this location. The $10 tour tickets can also be bought here.
Net proceeds from the tour will be used to supplement the Extension Horticulture Program in Haywood County. “In the past, funds have supported school gardens, materials for the plant clinic, and commercial horticultural programs that help the local green industry and its workers,” said Tim Mathews, Extension agent for Agriculture and Horticulture. “It’s an event we as a group and I, personally, look forward to. The volunteers put a lot of hard work into planning and executing the tour but it’s always worth the effort from the compliments we receive from the community.”
Advance sale tickets can be bought in Waynesville beginning April 4 at the Haywood Arts Counci’s Gallery 86 garden exhibit, 86 N. Main Street; the NC Extension Cooperative Center at 589 Raccoon Road; Preston Interiors & Decor at 240 Depot Street; Rux Gardens at 2930 Old Balsam Road; Trustworthy Hardware on Eagles Nest Road; Mountain View Nursey in Clyde at 1456 Hospital Drive; Tupelos Indoor & Outdoor Furniture on Dellwood Road at Swanger Lane in Maggie Valley; BB Barnes Nursery on Sweeten Creek Road in Asheville; or by calling the Cooperative Center at 828-456-3575. Tickets can be reserved for pick up at “wall call” the day of the tour by emailing [email protected].

Michelle, Thanks so much for sharing this post today letting us know about this tour. I am just down the mountain and didn't know about it. I'll share with all the piedmont NC gals. You are right those mountains tug at our heartstrings!!!
As a fan (and host) of garden tours I am thrilled that you are promoting the Master Gardener Volunteer Programs. A hardy thank you to ALL who prepare for these very special days ahead! You can bet I will be passing this information along to our friends in the Carolinas. I see a number can be contacted for more information but we are not given the actual tour date.
Looks like it should be a wonderful opportunity to see some fabulous gardens. Note to self...mark calender for a getaway to western North Carolina over the weekend of June 23rd. That is a heavenly part of the country with such breathtaking views. I'm sure the local gardeners are inspired by the wondrous vistas created by Mother Nature and all the gardens will be a feast for the eyes.

Michelle, our son lives in Asheville. When we drive down there from Pennsylvania and approach Asheville from Eastern Tennessee, we see this beautiful mountain view....and we always play Aaron Copland's "Appalachian Spring" so we savor the sights and sounds of the Blue Ridge Mountains

Okay the mountains are amazing but the butterfly with the dog in the background just pulls me right into the garden. Wonderful images.

As someone said last week.... "summer come!!" Michelle, these photos are stunning! I have that exact variety of all-purple columbine - love seeing it in the "wild". Thanks for starting the week off right!
Last time I vacationed in the Blue Ridge and Smokey Mountains was some 25 years ago... these pictures bring back good memories... thank you, Michelle.
