"I garden in central Ohio, new zone 6a. I love hostas, hardy geraniums, and shade loving perennials. I am a passionate vegetable gardener, with a particular interest in heirloom seeds It was a hard winter last year, well, the last couple of winters…so I tend to take a lot of photos come spring. It's cathartic."

You have a beautiful shade garden Joshua. Could you please tell what the name of your geraniums are in the 2nd photo? I love the long stems. Are those poppies in the 3rd photo? Wish you sent more photos in. 3 is definitely not enough. See you at Instagram.

HI Cherry. The geranium looks like G. Phaeum to me. Is that right, Joshua? The cultivar 'Samobor' has beautiful markings on the leaves. I've never grown it, but I think it is as easy as any other hardy geranium. (I didn't read up to see that Jane already speculated the same thing!)

Thanks Tim. I have grown several species of perennial geraniums but none of them have upright flowering stalks like those. Mourning widow geranium has creamy white variegation so it shines in the shade. I'll have a lookout for Samobor at the nurseries at my future visits.

Just straight G. phaeum, but I am a huge fan of hardy geraniums. I have several large patches of Geranium macrorrhizum-wouldn't be without it.

Beautiful photos, Joshua...they really focus in on such captivating texture that I feel like I am leaning down and looking at things closely in person. That variegated hosta looks almost decadently luscious...esp. graced with the spills of vibrant orange...just gorgeous.

What a nice thing to say, thank you!

Lovely, airy purple blossoms....wonderful shade garden!

Hello Joshua - Happy Memorial Day! I, too, love hostas, hardy geraniums and shade gardening. What is the hosta variety in photo one and the hardy geranium in photo two? Your gardens are so lovely and lush. Please send more pictures!

Thanks for sharing, Joshua! I echo the requests for plant names. Love the purple and can only imagine how the purple tulips would look contrasting with the orange poppies if they opened at the same time.

    1. joshuaretterer 05/29/2015

'Great Expectations' Hosta and Mourning Widow Geranium. The tulips are Philippe de Comines. Thank you for the kind words! Unfortunately, the tulips and the poppies usually miss each other.

Love your photos of your beautiful naturalistic garden, Joshua. I believe that cranesbill geranium is Mourning Widow...or if it has black variegated leaves it may be Samobar. They are both very handsome.,esp. Samobar, and happy naturalizing themselves in a shady area.

    1. joshuaretterer 05/29/2015

You are right on, it is Geranium phaeum. Not Samobar, but that does sound interesting. Thank you for the kind words!

Beautiful photos.Your shade areas look very lush and I am surprised at the poppy growing next to the hosta. I presume they get at least half a day of sunlight. Would love to see some of your vegetables.

Beautiful combinations Joshua! Is that hosta with the orange poppy 'Dream Weaver'? Lovely, lovely.

    1. joshuaretterer 05/29/2015

The hosta is 'Great Expectations,' but I also have 'Dream Weaver' as well, both great plants. Thank you for the compliment!

This has a naturalized look of beauty.

Great images, Joshua. Nice plants. Hopefully your garden here in the midlands is looking more stunning every day. I feel like many of my plants that have come through these past winters are saying, "I don't care anymore: I'm going to make huge leaves and go for it this spring!" Your instagram looks great, too.

  12. user-7007140 05/26/2015

Beautiful photos, Joshua. The geraniums and poppies look amazing, as do the deep maroon tulips.
    Any deer in your garden!
Everything is stunningly beautiful this spring, isn't it? Lucky us.
