Gardening Within a Small Space

Laurie Anders creates a relaxing retreat despite the restraints of a small space.

"My husband and I live in a townhouse in western New York.  A small courtyard at our front entrance is our gardening space and it is a delight to see it from our kitchen table each day.  The water lily pool contains koi and often is home to a frog or two.  The plants are a mix of perennials and different annuals each year."

Hello there Laurie - Nice use of in-ground and pot plants in a small gardening space. The koi and frog(s) appear to like it too!

Nothing small about the wallop of color your plant selections are providing, Laurie. I love how the purple, orange and yellow are working together in the second picture. I'd be quite pleased, also, if they were part of my view.

Laurie: Great use of a small space, especially the addition of the pond. The Brunnera looks great against the brick. You have created a very welcoming and peaceful place. Well done.

I love the agapanthus. Do you have any restrictions with your homeowners association? You have chosen a nice variety of plants, and the pond just makes it all complete!

Great job on making the most of your space. Love your water lily and pond. Love you container grouping with the stone water feature on the deck. Do the birds love it? i want your watering can!

Laurie, you are obviously a seasoned gardener to be able to do so much in such a small space. Love your pond and your great plant selections. It's nice that you have several plants in pots so that you can change it up easily, but I'm curious what you do with them in the winter.

What a beautiful space you have created at the entrance to your home. I especially love the container you have with the salvia. Vikki in VA

You have done a beautiful job. I admire the intelligent yet selfless use of the space with good selection of plants and sensible idea of their demands for light and air.
